Barometric pressure in Delhi today

1011hPa

Steady

Apart from the daily swing, pressure has hardly changed over the last 24 hours. That leaves it 1 hPa lower than yesterday at this time. Day by day, it holds near this level until Sunday, then rises slowly until Monday.

Current sea-level reading for Delhi, as of 17:00 local time.

Pressure graph: the past week and the week ahead

The shaded part shows the days already gone. The thicker line is the forecast. The thin dotted line is the average over a whole day, so you can see where pressure is heading under the daily up and down.

The forecast runs 7 days ahead.
The daily rhythm

Delhi has a strong daily rhythm: pressure rises and falls about 4 hPa every day, highest around 09:00 and 22:00 and lowest around 03:00 and 16:00. That wave is most of what the graph shows within a day, so the change since yesterday tells you more here than the change over the past few hours.

Your own barometer

Delhi sits 231 m above sea level, so a barometer in the city reads about 26 hPa lower than the sea-level figure. A home station set to the local reading should show about 985 hPa as of 17:00.

How much the pressure changes in Delhi

In Delhi the pressure hardly changes from one day to the next. All year round a typical day’s change is about 1 hPa.

Does the pressure change a lot in Delhi?

Delhi, like about 46 out of every 100 large cities, almost never has a change of more than 10 hPa from one day to the next.

Each dot stands for up to 20 cities with 100,000 people or more. The first column is much taller than shown. Cities higher than 1,000 m are left out, and so are smaller cities within 15 km of a bigger one, unless they are capitals, so that suburbs are not counted twice.

These figures come from ERA5, in which the European weather centre ECMWF rebuilds past weather from a weather model and observations, for an area about 28 km across around Delhi, 1991 to 2020. Each change is the difference between one day’s average pressure and the next day’s.

Pressure in Delhi through the year

Delhi's pressure follows one slow yearly cycle. In winter it sits high, with January averaging about 1017 hPa. Then the level slides down through the hot months, reaching its low near 1000 in July at the height of the monsoon, and climbs all the way back by December. Nearly 18 hPa separates the top of that curve from the bottom. Day-to-day jumps, by contrast, are rare. About 50 days a year dip below 1000 hPa, nearly all in the hot months. And Delhi stands about 231 m above sea level, so a barometer here shows some 26 hPa less than the sea-level figures on this page.

Questions about the pressure in Delhi

What is the barometer reading in Delhi right now?

Sea-level pressure in Delhi is 1011 hPa as of 17:00 local time, unchanged over the last three hours. A barometer in the city itself, 231 m up, shows about 985 hPa.

Is the barometer rising or falling in Delhi today?

Apart from the daily swing, pressure has hardly changed over the last 24 hours. That leaves it 1 hPa lower than yesterday at this time. Over the last three hours it has not changed.

Has the pressure in Delhi changed since yesterday?

Hardly. At this time yesterday it read 1012 hPa; it is 1 hPa lower now.

What has the pressure in Delhi been over the last few days?

Over the past 7 days it ran between 1010 hPa (a week ago, in the afternoon) and 1020 hPa (on Monday morning). The biggest change in any 24 hours was a rise of 5 hPa, in the 24 hours ending on Sunday evening. Before today, each day's average was between 1012 and 1017 hPa.

Is 1011 hPa high or low pressure?

Atmospheric pressure between about 1000 and 1025 hPa is ordinary at sea level. 1011 hPa sits in the middle of that range. In Delhi most days average between 997 and 1019 hPa. The last 24 hours average about 1013 hPa, within that usual range.

What is normal barometric pressure for Delhi?

From 1991 to 2020 the sea-level average for Delhi was 1008 hPa, and most days average between 997 and 1019 hPa. It is usually highest in December and January and lowest in June and July.

When does barometric pressure change the most in Delhi?

No time of year stands out: the pressure in Delhi barely changes from one day to the next all year round. Between 1991 and 2020, a typical day’s change was about 1 hPa, and a change of more than 10 hPa never happened.

Why does my own barometer show a different number?

Usually altitude, and sometimes the instrument itself. To compare cities, pressure is corrected to sea level. The figure for Delhi, which stands 231 m above sea level, is in the note above: about 26 hPa below the sea-level reading. If your barometer is already set to sea level and still reads slightly differently, that is the setting on the instrument rather than the weather.

Does falling pressure mean rain?

Not by itself. Away from the tropics, falling pressure usually means a low is approaching, and lows carry the fronts that bring cloud and rain, so the two often arrive together. But a shallow fall can pass with nothing more than cloud, and rain falls under steady pressure too. The graph tells you a system is on the way, not how wet it will be. The week ahead, just above, shows the rain forecast beside the pressure.
